In the past, English physicians had difficulty studying the human body due to regulations. They were allowed to dissect only one body during their education and were reluctant to give up those skeletons.

Since keeping skeletons was socially unacceptable, doctors hid them in closets. This led to the phrase "skeleton in the closet," meaning a hidden secret or embarrassing fact.
